Ava DuVernay was born on the 24th of August 1972 on the 24th of August 1972 in Long Beach California. DuVernay was motivated to pursue her love of the arts by her aunt Denise at the age of a small kid. The aunt was on the night shift as a nurse, so she could pursue her love for art literature and theater throughout the day. DuVernay loved the film West Side Story, which she introduced to her. DuVernay was taught by her that art could be an avenue for action. DuVernay was raised by an aunt who was socially aware and showed her how to use the arts as a means to express herself. DuVernay was brought up in Compton by her parents, however, she spent her summers in Lowndes County Alabama. This is the place where her father's family was for many generations. Her father was awed by the Civil Rights movement's historic march through the Edmund Pettus Bridge, in the nearby town of Selma Alabama. DuVernay was strongly influenced by the summers she spent in Selma, and later directed an documentary on King's father, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. In the year 1990, DuVernay completed her studies at Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. She attended University of California Los Angeles for a degree in English in addition to African American Studies. DuVernay was in college when she started to get attracted to the field of production for television journalism. She began her career as an assistant for CBS News in the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalls being asked to look over the rubbish at the home of a member on the jury. After being disappointed in journalism due to the work she was assigned she decided to pursue a career in publicity. DuVernay was employed by a tiny studio as a junior publicist right after college. She was hired in 1999 and founded her own business of public relations dubbed The DuVernay Agency.
